Unitra introducing test vinyl records for accurate setup of turntables.

2024/09/20

The Munich fair was not only the exhibition premiere of the renewed Polish brand Unitra to an international audience, but also an opportunity to present new products.

But those who expected other new audio components, which Unitra will undoubtedly show soon, may now be surprised. The novelty is from the category of audio accessories and is also intended for all lovers of listening to vinyl records, regardless of whether they own an Unitra Edmund player, Fryderyk, or a turntable of any other brand. It is even possible that this novelty will become a sales hit, because there is nothing like it on the market, or there is, but in worse quality. So what is the mystery product?

First of all, Unitra is a turntable manufacturer, so it is logical to expect professional erudition in this area. Advanced engineering in development and construction as well as careful and detailed final inspection.

Secondly, Unitra still cooperates with the constructors of the former Polish brand Fonica. They are gentlemen from the old school who can calculate integrals off the top of their head, they have enormous theoretical and practical experience, which under communism could not be fully utilized, either because of the limits of the technologies of the time, or because of the rape of the construction by the workers of the 'optimization' department. The joint discussion, ideas and results obtained from the development of the first prototypes allowed a better understanding and, as a result, an improvement in the behavior of the arms.

Thirdly, and here we finally get to the heart of the matter, the lack of a suitable quality measuring tool such as a perfectly pressed test board proved to be a huge problem. The designers tried 12 test boards from different manufacturers and literally every one had something. . . were not straight, centered, records did not have the promised parameters, or were otherwise unsuitable for testing purposes. Literally none of them were completely usable, so it was concluded that if Unitra wanted to continuously check its turntables with a measuring board it could rely on, it had to make one itself. The release of the company's calibration album is actually a side effect of the engineers' frustration.

Test vinyl is available in two variants.

The Standard version includes three frequency response control tracks on the A side with different recording levels (0dB, -14dB, -20dB), allowing for playback of a recording with a wider range in the treble range. The fourth track contains a -14dB signal interrupted by pauses. The B side has a flat surface without grooves, which allows for precise antiskating adjustment. A protractor for setting the tonearm and pickup geometry and a silent endless groove ideal for experiments with the mechanical isolation of the turntable chassis.

Laboratory Edition, contains two vinyl records. The first one is the same as the Standard version, the second one has additional signals. 3150Hz for accurate measurement of wow & flutter, 1kHz mono signal to check channel balance and other special test tracks to help verify turntable and pickup setup and condition.
